2019 elections: Enugu INEC receives award of excellence from ASUP

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Enugu State, Wednesday received an award of Excellence from the African Students Union Parliament, ASUP for its role in “Election Organisation and Execution’’ in the just-concluded 2019 General Elections.

ASUP, which is a Pan-African students movement, also presented an award of “Hard work and Dedication’’ to the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC Dr Emeka Ononamadu.

Receiving the award, Ononamadu said that credible election is just the foundation for good governance which Africans have for long yearned for, noting that if elections do not produce credible leaders, Africa will continue in backwardness.

He stated that Enugu is the state with the least number of petitions in the electoral tribunal which clearly shows that INEC played its part in ensuring a free, fair and credible polls.

“I strongly believe that with time, some petitioners, even among the few, will see reasons to withdraw from the tribunal,’’ he said.

He however charged the staff of INEC in the state to re-dedicate themselves to the service of the nation especially as thr country gears up for another general election in 2023.

Earlier in his address, Abel Okewu, Speaker of ASUP, said that the group had closely followed the activities of the INEC office in Enugu and that of its REC from the build-up as well as elections proper.

“We can attest to how this office conducted a flawless and rancour-free elections in Enugu State, which is widely accepted by all as the most peaceful and stress-free elections in the state,’’ Okewu said.

He noted that the group also observed the selfless leadership, dedication, financial prudence, team work as well as positive transformation Ononamadu had brought to INEC office and work in Enugu State.
